Feathers fanned, tail spread, peonies blooming beside him always

A full-bodied peacock — his turquoise and teal feathers fanning out in layered, sculpted appliqué — stands perched on a branch at the center of this deep plum quilted traveler. His chest is a rich cobalt blue, his legs and beak touched in warm gold, and his sweeping tail catches the eye with the classic "eye" feather markings rendered in teal, green, and gold thread. Pink peonies in full bloom frame him on either side, their sage leaves trailing across the quilted ground. The background itself is built up in a dense swirling stitch pattern that gives the plum fabric real depth and texture, while teal blue piping traces the bag's edges and the double carry handles are cut from the same floral-patterned fabric used at the end panels. Claire and Riley found this piece the same way they find everything for the shop their mother Margaret opened here in Cape May in 1978 — by choosing only the things they genuinely couldn't walk away from.

• Sculpted Peacock Appliqué — The peacock is built up in layers of teal, cobalt, and gold appliqué with individual feather markings stitched in precise detail, so he reads as almost three-dimensional against the bag.
• Coordinating Floral Handles — The double carry handles and end panels are cut from a purple-and-teal floral cotton that ties every colour in the design together in one place.
• The Last of This Run — We took what the workshop had left. Once these are gone we will not be getting them again.
• Looking After Her — Spot clean with a soft damp cloth and let her air dry. No tumble dryer — it flattens the quilting.

You spot it first on the baggage carousel in Charleston — that deep plum with the peacock's teal tail fanning out — and three strangers ask where you got it before you even reach the exit.
