Half shadow, half fire, and those swirling green eyes watching

Look closely at this bag and you see a full cat face filling every inch of the barrel: deep violet and cobalt on the left cheek, blazing orange and golden yellow on the right, with a clean white muzzle running down the center. The nose is a vivid magenta pink, and two large eyes stare out in swirling quilted green — the kind of green that changes depending on the light. Raised white whiskers fan out from both sides in crisp appliqué lines, and the fur itself is built up in dense free-motion quilting — spirals, feathers, and leaf-shaped stitching that give the whole surface a sculptural, almost painterly texture. Claire and Riley found this piece the way they find everything for the shop: by handling it themselves, the same way their mother Margaret did when she opened on the Washington Street Mall back in 1978. They pick what stops them cold. This one stopped them cold.

• The Last of This Run — We took what the workshop had left. Once these are gone we will not be getting them again.
• Looking After Her — Spot clean with a soft damp cloth and let her air dry. No tumble dryer — it flattens the quilting.
